Serengeti vs. Maasai Mara: Which Should You Choose?

By David Mollel

The Short Answer

Both the Serengeti (Tanzania) and the Maasai Mara (Kenya) are part of the same ecosystem, split by an artificial border. The wildlife, landscapes, and migration patterns are continuous. However, the experience of visiting each is quite different.

Wildlife & Density

Serengeti: 14,750 square kilometers of pure wilderness. The Serengeti is 10 times larger than the Mara, meaning more space, fewer vehicles, and a greater sense of solitude. Wildlife density is slightly lower per square kilometer, but the sheer scale means you encounter a wider variety of ecosystems.

Maasai Mara: 1,510 square kilometers of concentrated wildlife. The Mara is smaller, which means game drives are shorter and predator sightings can feel more frequent. However, this also means more vehicles at popular sightings.

The Migration Experience

Serengeti: The migration spends 9–10 months of the year in Tanzania. You can witness calving season (January–March), the Western Corridor trek (April–June), and the Mara River crossings (August–October) all within the Serengeti.

Maasai Mara: The migration enters the Mara from July to October. This is the iconic river crossing period. If your sole goal is to see the crossings, the Mara offers a front-row seat. But the window is shorter, and the crowds are heavier.

Crowds & Exclusivity

Serengeti wins on space. Even during peak season, you can find areas of the park where you are the only vehicle for miles. The Mara's smaller size means popular sightings can attract 10–15 vehicles in a tight cluster. For honeymooners or photographers seeking solitude, the Serengeti is unmatched.

Cost Comparison

Tanzania's park fees are slightly higher than Kenya's, but the overall cost depends on your accommodation choices. A premium Serengeti safari can run $800–$1,500 per person per day, while a similar standard in the Mara might be $600–$1,200. However, budget options exist in both destinations.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Serengeti if: You want vast wilderness, fewer vehicles, a longer migration season, and the flexibility to combine with Ngorongoro and Tarangire.

Choose Maasai Mara if: You have less time (3–4 days is enough for the Mara), want to focus specifically on river crossings, or are combining with a Kenya beach holiday.

At Ronjoo, we run both circuits. Our honest advice: if you have 5+ days and value space over speed, the Serengeti will leave a deeper mark on your soul.
