What is the Great Migration?
The Great Migration is the largest overland migration of mammals on Earth. Over two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move in a continuous cycle through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water. This ancient rhythm has played out for millennia, and it remains one of the most awe-inspiring wildlife events on the planet.
When Does It Happen?
The migration is a year-round cycle, but certain moments stand out:
- January–March: Calving season in the Southern Serengeti. Over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within a few weeks, attracting massive predator action.
- April–May: The herds begin their northwest trek through the Western Corridor.
- June–July: The Grumeti River crossings begin, with crocodile-infested waters creating dramatic encounters.
- August–October: The Mara River crossings in Northern Serengeti. This is the most iconic and unpredictable phase.
- November–December: The herds return south as the short rains begin, completing the circle.
Where to Stay
Your choice of camp can make or break your migration experience. In the Southern Serengeti, we recommend Ndutu Lodge or Oliver's Camp during calving season. For the river crossings, our guides favour Lamai Wilderness and Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge in the north.
What to Expect at a River Crossing
River crossings are not scripted. You may wait for hours, or you may witness thousands of animals plunging into crocodile-infested waters within minutes. The key is patience and positioning. Our guides have decades of experience reading the signs: when the herds are gathering, when they're nervous, and when the first brave individuals decide to jump.
The migration doesn't run on a timetable. It runs on rain and grass. That's why you need a guide who understands the ancient rhythms of this land.
Photography Tips
Bring a telephoto lens (at least 300mm) and a fast shutter speed. The dust, light, and movement create challenging conditions, but also some of the most dramatic wildlife photography opportunities in the world. A bean bag for your vehicle window is invaluable.
Best Camera Settings
- Shutter speed: 1/1000s or faster for action
- Aperture: f/5.6–f/8 for depth of field
- ISO: Auto, but cap at 3200 to manage noise
- Drive mode: Continuous high-speed for bursts
Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned safari hand, the Great Migration is an experience that rewires your understanding of the natural world. It is chaos and order, violence and beauty, all unfolding under an endless African sky.
